Registration - CBY 142 Chassis No. - S1E118567 M.O.T. - Exempt Morris Eights in such pristine condition as ‘CBY 142’ are a rarity at today’s auctions. Clearly the subject of a detailed restoration, the mighty Morris is presented in lustrous black over blue paintwork, livery that is enhanced by an attractive gold coachline. It is a four-door version that comes complete with sliding sunroof, opening windscreen, luggage rack, flashing indicators in addition to the original semaphore arms, and door mirrors on both flanks. The underside appears very tidy and suitably protected from corrosion. The interior also displays well, with seemingly unmarked blue leather trim and neat blue carpets throughout. Being a Series I example, it rides on Magna wire wheels that have apparently been freshly powder coated in recent times. The under-bonnet area is to the same standard as the rest of the car, and includes recent-looking hoses and pipes, a rare air filter, SU electric fuel pump, plus a selection of tools within the overhead toolbox. The vendor informs us that the 918cc engine was rebuilt a few years ago, since when the vehicle has evidently seen very little use. He describes the car as being in ‘nice running order’ and grades the side-valve engine, three-speed transmission and electrics as being ‘excellent’, and the bodywork, paintwork and interior trim as ‘good’. A relatively unusual opportunity for lovers of the breed. Inspired by the popularity of Ford’s Model Y family saloon, Morris replaced its long-running Minor with the Eight in 1935. It was available in saloon, tourer and van guises. The standard specification included a full set of instruments, its hydraulically-operated brakes were vastly superior to the Austin Seven’s cable system, and its electric windscreen wipers put the vacuum ones of the Model Y to shame. In summary: • A very well-presented Series I example • Clearly the subject of a detailed restoration • Good specification includes sliding sunroof and opening windscreen
